Methodological issues in culture studies

Our main methodological interests lay in developing and somehow inventing interdisciplinary research languages on the crossroads of Cultural sociology and Cultural Studies. We consider Cultural Studies not only as a field where significant contemporary interpretations of culture (as a process of producing meanings by different social subjects) were established. For us the heritage of Cultural Studies concerns the question of the interdependence between the object of inquiry and researchers’ values and methods.  In our discussion of this intellectual tradition we address the evolution of Cultural Studies, their development inside and outside the academia (particularly in Russia). We constantly question and update sets of tools used for our cultural analysis, projecting important principles of contemporary cultural theories into the specific practices of research.

Our research areas include:

·         Cultural Studies, sociology of culture, cultural sociology

·         Cultural Studies and critical theory

·         History of Cultural Studies and Russian “kulturologia”

·         Cultural institutions in modern societies

·         Theories of culture and transformations of cultural practices
