Natalia Samutina participated in 'Dirt, Punk, Trash' workshop in Amsterdam

On December 1, Natalia Samutina participated in the international 'Dirt, Punk, Trash' workshop, organized by Amsterdam University in the framework of the project “Sublime Imperfections” (Dr. Ellen Rutten). Art and cultural theoreticians and practitioners from different countries theorized the notions – which are now often employed interchangeably – in two ways. They discussed concrete punk-, dirt- and trash-focused cultural practices and objects; and they mapped and unraveled conceptual interrelations between the notions. In her presentation “What is trash within participatory cultures? Functions of cultural hierarchies in amateurish internet production”, Natalia Samutina discussed the ambiguous meanings and functions of the notion “trash” in the international fandom and fan fiction practice, with special attention to the usage of the word by Russian fans.
