On June 3, IGITI Research assistant Alexandra Kolesnik participated in Social Sciences Research Student Seminar at the Department of History of University College London. She presented a paper “Representing history in British heavy metal music of the 1980s” based on her dissertation research. Discussing the paper participants touched on the theoretical framework of the research project, and practical questions. See abstract.

On May 28-30, IGITI Research assistant Alexandra Kolesnik participated in the conference “Sight and Sound” organized by the Department of Music of King’s College London and University of North Carolina (Chapel Hill). She presented a paper “Sounds like music hall: the Kinks’ representation of the British musical past” based on her dissertation research. See the conference programme and abstracts.

On April 27, Kirill Levinson (IGITI HSE Leading Research Fellow and PhD student of the Institute for Eastern European History and Area Studies Tübingen) presented a paper “Die soziale Konstruktion des Rechtschreibfehlers im deutschen und im russischen Sprachraum” at The Eberhard Karls Universität Tübingen.

During the seminar "Going Digital: The Forms and Formats of the Medialization of Knowledge Inside and Outside of the Academia" Oksana Zaporozhets, Leading Research Fellow at Poletayev Institute for Theoretical and Historical Studies in the Humanities and Ekaterina Lapina-Kratasyuk, Associate Professor at the Faculty of Communications, Media and Design presented their joint report "The Anthropology of Digital City As an Emerging Field: The Issues of Research and Teaching."

A new paper on popular culture by Natalia Samutina was published in the Working Papers Series by the Basic Research Program of Higher School of Economics. The paper is called "Emotional landscapes of reading" and discusses the passionate immersive reading of fan fiction communities. Full text (in English) can be downloaded from our website.

On April 2-3, Alexandra Kolesnik participated in the seminars "EthNoise!: The Music, Language, and Culture Workshop" at the Department of Music, the University of Chicago. She presented the preliminary results of her dissertation research project and took part in the discussion.

On March 26-27, Alexandra Kolesnik participated in the conference "Postmodernity’s Musical Pasts: Rediscoveries and Revivals after 1945" at The City University of New York. She presented a paper "Retromania in Contemporary British Popular Music". See the conference programme and abstracts.

On March 3-5, Natalia Samutina and Oksana Zaporozhets participated in the workshop "Current Research on Post-Socialist Cities in East Central Europe: Transformations of Public Urban Spaces after 1989 – Agents, Practices and Strategies" at The Herder Institute for Historical Research on East Central Europe, Marburd. They presented a paper "Parks as reinvented public arenas in Post-Socialist cities: the case of Tsaritsyno Moscow". See the workshop programme.

On February 5–6, Yulia Kamaeva participated in the conference "Sustainable Tourism Development in the Changing World", organized at St. Petersburg Higher School of Economics campus. She presented a paper "Thematisation in the light of transformation of the tourist’s image in Russian small historic towns". See the conference program and abstracts.

The paper of Yulia Kamaeva "Strategies of cultural resources management in small historic towns in Russia (cases of Rostovthe-Great and Pereslavl-Zalessky" has been published in the IGITI series of working papers (WP6 “Humanities”).  In the light of the theories of M. Kavaratzis, G.J. Ashworth, G. Richards and J. Wilson author considers the transformations that have occurred in the system of cultural management in two Russian historic towns, Rostov-the-Great and Pereslavl-Zalessky, during the post-Soviet period. The paper deals with identification of new subjects in cultural management system and with changes that have occurred in the structure of relations among the players in that field.
