Alexandra Kolesnik, Junior Research Fellow and Senior Lecturer at HSE’s Poletayev Institute for Theoretical and Historical Studies in the Humanities recently completed her post graduate studies in History and successfully defended her PhD thesis entitled ‘Historical representations in British popular musical culture of the 1960-1980s’. IGITI researchers Julia Ivanova and Pavel Sokolov participated in the international workshop "Language, Foreignness, Openness: Three Disciplinary Perspectives", held in Queen Mary University of London on November 17–18. Julia Ivanova presented a paper on "Linguis loquentur novis: Plurality of Languages аs a Malediction аnd a Way to Salvation", and Pavel Sokolov has dedicated his talk to "Antonio Genovesi (1712–1769): The Study of Modern Languages as a Foundation Stone of the National Common Sense".

HSE’s Yulia Ivanova and Pavel Sokolov Present Seminars at University of Cologne

Yulia Ivanova and Pavel Sokolov, Leading Research Fellows at the HSE Poletayev Institute for Theoretical and Historical Studies in the Humanities, conducted three seminars for the students of the University of Cologne’s Slavic Department on June 27 and 28. The aim of the HSE researchers was to inform students about the relations between Rus and Italy during the Middle Ages and the early Modern period, as well as shed light on some facts of how Italian culture was perceived in Russia from the 18th through the 20th centuries.

Russian Sincerity Today – A Conversation with Professor Ellen Rutten

On May 23, Ellen Rutten, Professor of Russian and Slavic Studies at the University of Amsterdam, delivered a lecture at HSE on her new book, ‘Sincerity after Communism’. An expert on Slavonic literature and culture, Professor Rutten is involved in numerous projects, including the Digital Emotions group, Sublime Imperfections, and ‘Russian Literature’, a journal where she serves as editor-in-chief.

On May 12-13, IGITI Research Centre for Contemporary Culture held an international conference "Challenges of Participatory Culture: Methodologies and Perspectives of Research". Social scientists and scholars from the US and Europe met at the Higher School of Economics and discussed theoretical issues and research methods of the phenomenon of 'participatory culture', as well as different aspects of contemporary culture – fanfiction, street art, musical fandoms, etc. Dr Mark Duffett (University of Chester, UK) wrote a post about the conference.
