On April 20, 2016, Danielle Jacquart, dean and professor of the Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudies (Paris), reported on the issue called Animated Body in Medieval Medical Thought.

An international Spring School 'Texts and Places: Introduction to Russian History, Language and Culture' ('I testi dei luoghi: introduzione alla storia, alla cultura e alla lingua russa') held at the National Research University Higher School of Economics (HSE) on March 15–23, 2016. The School was jointly organized by the Poletaev Institute for Theoretical and Historical Studies in the Humanities (IGITI) and the University of Eastern Piedmont  'Amedeo Avogadro.' From IGITI, the organizing committee was represented by leading research fellow Julia Ivanova and senior research fellow Pavel Sokolov, while associate professor of the Faculty of Humanities Stefania Irene Sini invaluably contributed to the organization process from the Italian side. 

A new paper on popular culture by Natalia Samutina was published in "Continuum: Journal of Media & Cultural Studies". The paper is titled "Fan fiction as world-building: transformative reception in crossover writing" and discusses fan fiction communities. See the abstract of the paper.

Olessia Kirtchik, senior research fellow of the Poletaev Institute for Theoretical and Historical Studies in the Humanities, presented a paper at the conference Economie de marché et mondes ruraux à l’Est de l’Europe arranged by the University of Bordeaux and the Center of Emile Durkheim. The paper analyzes Russian laws on land ownership in the late Soviet and post-Soviet periods.

Alexandra Kolesnik, research fellow at the Poletaev Institute for Theoretical and Historical Studies in the Humanities, participated in the international interdisciplinary conference "Usable Pasts" arranged by the Higher School of Economics in St. Petersburg on February 4-5 with her paper 'British Popular Music History and New Urban Images: the Case of Sheffield'. The Article by Natalia Samutina entitled "Emotional Landscapes of Reading: Fan Fiction in the Context of Contemporary Reading Practices" was published in International Journal of Cultural Studies.

IGITI publishes the plan of its academic activities for the first half of 2016

In case you had no chance to participate in our academic activities within 2015, we are happy to share them with you. The archive we publish on our website includes over 40 conference talks, round tables, workshops and seminars. 

From November 12th – 14th, 2015, a workshop on ‘Historical and Cultural Narratives. Rivalries and Entanglements in Eastern Europe (Russia, Ukraine and Belarus)’ took place at the University of Tübingen. The event attracted researchers from Germany, Russia, Ukraine and Belarus. The workshop opened on November 12 with lectures by Irina Savelieva, IGITI Director, on ‘Professional History and Public History: Goals and Means of Historical Narratives’ and Tamara Hundorova, Professor of the National Academy of Science of Ukraine, on 'Generations in Contemporary Ukrainian Literature’. Alexander Makhov prepared a report about the event.

The Poletayev Institute for Theoretical and Historical Studies in the Humanities (IGITI) held an international conference on 29-30 October 2015 on ‘Biological Concepts, Models, and Metaphors in Social and Human Sciences’. For two days, Russian, European and American researchers discussed the relations between social sciences and the humanities and various life sciences. This topic arises largely in the light of the recent boom in genetics, medicine and biology which have led academics to reconsider previous concepts of boundaries and connections between disciplines.
