HSE’s Yulia Ivanova and Pavel Sokolov Present Seminars at University of Cologne

Yulia Ivanova and Pavel Sokolov, Leading Research Fellows at the HSE Poletayev Institute for Theoretical and Historical Studies in the Humanities, conducted three seminars for the students of the University of Cologne’s Slavic Department on June 27 and 28. The aim of the HSE researchers was to inform students about the relations between Rus and Italy during the Middle Ages and the early Modern period, as well as shed light on some facts of how Italian culture was perceived in Russia from the 18th through the 20th centuries.

On June 27-28, 2017, Julia Ivanova and Pavel Sokolov, leading research fellows of IGITI, held three seminars for the students of the Institute for Slavic Studies at Cologne University. The seminars opened a new course "Iter Italicum Slavorum" aimed to explore how Italy and Italian culture were perceived in the Slavic world.

Irina Savelieva, director of IGITI, and Alexandra Kolesnik, junior research fellow, participated in the annual conference on public history arranged by International Federation for Public History (IFPH-FIHP) and Italian Association of Public History (AIPH) on June 5-9, 2017, in Ravenna (Italy). Irina Savelieva reported on "Public History in Russia: Professional Work, Amateurism, a Hobby, or a ‘Star Fever’ of an Academic Historian?," while Alexandra Kolesnik spoke about "Performing History on Stage: Representations of the Past in British Heavy Metal."

Ellen Rutten, “Sincerity after Communism”: seminar and book presentation

On May 23, Prof. Ellen Rutten, Professor of Literature and Chair of the Department of Russian & Slavic Studies at the University of Amsterdam presented a paper based on her new book “Sincerity after Communism” (Yale University Press, 2017) at the Research Center for Contemporary Culture Academic Seminar. Seminar was organised by the Center together with research groop "Participatory culture: communities and practices".

Russian Sincerity Today – A Conversation with Professor Ellen Rutten

On May 23, Ellen Rutten, Professor of Russian and Slavic Studies at the University of Amsterdam, delivered a lecture at HSE on her new book, ‘Sincerity after Communism’. An expert on Slavonic literature and culture, Professor Rutten is involved in numerous projects, including the Digital Emotions group, Sublime Imperfections, and ‘Russian Literature’, a journal where she serves as editor-in-chief.

Roger Smith's Lecture on Career in Intellectual History

On April 19, 2017, Roger Smith, British historian of science, professor emeritus of Lancaster University, and an author of "The History of Human Sciences" (1997) gave a lecture on "Career in Intellectual History -- How Changes in the Field Affect Scientist's Work."
